Sing with more strength and agility, study John Mayer
John Mayer’s voice is so good because his guitar playing and singing inspire each other!
Especially when he sings live, you can hear him borrowing licks from his guitar with his voice. Improvising melodies, subtle ornamentations… It’s really fun to pick things out of his performances and claim “Oh yeah.. That was definitely a guitar lick.”
This way of singing is a huge way to gain strength and agility in your own voice. It’s more freeing than trying to take other singing and put it in your voice because there’s more of a sense of “anything goes”.
You’re free to try imitating a guitar lick or run, attach it to an existing melody that you’re working with and just see what happens.
Let’s see how John Mayer does it by looking at some live performances and short studio examples and then try things out with our own voices!
