Dynamic Tone & Placement Awareness
Time can get away from you as you explore different ways to expand your range. You push higher, experiment with mixed voice, work on your head voice. It all becomes about the notes.
There’s a problem though… With making your singing about goal notes or goal groups of notes. It’s not entirely bad to have this perspective, but often times, it’s easy to forget one of the fundamental aspects of singing that helps us improve our range in the first place (let alone enable amazing tone and placement possibilities).
You see, you can throw or reach for just about any note, but what about the note quality? How are you connecting that note… What’s your phrasing like? If you have even a small or average range but are able to really milk the quality of your notes so that each note and phrase is considerately delivered… You’ll be where you want to be!
What’s more… Your range will actually increase without you trying! Enter: A focus on breath support and airflow management. Learning to creatively and subtly use and moderate your airflow is the gateway to a truly engaging voice… NOT how many notes you can screech out!
There’s probably not a better singer to learn this from than Lady Gaga. She’s got it all really, but in this video, we’re going to hone in on her subtle and masterful use of air. Unlock and recenter your voice here:
