John Frusciante’s Off The Wall Vocals Will Free Your Voice

Very often, we get into ‘pursuit’ mode with our voice. I’m guilty of this. We plan, practice and rehearse for just the right sound.

John Frusciante has certainly had his calculated moments as the crystal clear background vocalist for the Red Hot Chili Peppersbut in his early solo material, he goes the completely other direction.

You’ll hear single takes, stripped back production (or is it?) and melodies with performances that leave you both wanting to scratch your head and let out a few random squeals yourself!

As I break down other singers, I’m always encouraging you listen and exaggerate things in your own voice so that you can hone in on how things can feel.

With Frusciante’s vocals from his 1994 album Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt, he does all the exaggerating for us and in the process leaves a gold mine of opportunities for cool tones, lines and vocal effects!
