How 'character' is better than perfection, a case study
We often get so caught up in being ‘good’ that we forget to be interesting!! I present to you a case study involving the vocalists from System Of A Down:
The interplay between Serj and Daron and the massive swings in theatrical vocal expression make this song a true marvel… Especially when you get to listen to the isolated vocals and hear all the subtleties.
As you go through these tracks with me, have a special ear ready for the many ‘characters’ that these singers create and embody. It’s not at all about perfect vocal technique or accuracy.
It’s not about hitting pitches or nailing that scream. It’s about abandonment and emotion. Sure, the techniques are solid because these singers have practiced to the point of reliable muscle memory, but they are not focused on anything but being ‘in the act’ … ‘in character’.
Let’s be inspired to do the same! There’s time to practice and a time to emote! And… haha… we need to practice emoting too!
