Matt Bellamy - Muse - Starlight Isolated Vocal Analysis

Starlight is a great vocal performance, and there’s a lot to be studied here in terms of phrasing, placement, and emotional engagement. Some neat subtle effects go into enhancing this performance.

Let’s start by talking about how Matt phrases things and gets on the very front of his voice. So you hear him talk, and he talks like a normal guy. However, when he sings, he has this propensity to start things further back with a lower larynx and then brings his larynx up and brings things more forward, really experimenting with that idea of modifying your tone dynamically through one word.

Having this mindset going into absorbing these isolated tracks, this dynamic moving of tone, of our larynx, of placing the sound super forward is key to opening up all sorts of things in our own voice.
